2.  Brigit Gail Dermott:  Playing with Shapes

Let’s play with shapes! In this class, students will create improv quilt tops using basic shapes including half-square triangles, half-rectangle triangles, flying geese, and drunkards path.

Students will arrange these shapes to tell a visual story. We’ll discuss working with scale, color, and negative space to create a harmonious design, and examples of designs that feature arranged shapes such as Sanna Annukka (Marimekko designer), Otomi artwork, and others will be reviewed for inspiration.

Students will sew their shape blocks, spend time playing on the design wall to create their unique design, and then will start piecing their quilt tops. Each student will finish class with a unique design and all the blocks needed to complete their project at home. Students should know how to piece basic shapes as the focus will be on designing and piecing the quilt top.
